		<description>Southdown: An Early Chapter (2019)

29th January 2026

I found this roll of expired 1980s colour film in the same box as my first 35mm camera. Loading it felt like a small leap of faith.&#38;nbsp; The first place I took it was home, photographing my friends in Southdown, Bath, just to see what would happen.

“Looking at these images now, it feels like yesterday, and yet so long ago. Some frames are out of focus, and some moments I barely remember living through. There are places, fragments of time that feel familiar but distant, like they belong to another version of me. It feels like a different life, from an early chapter.”

Within my photographic practice, I experiment with digital and analogue formats exploring a variety of methodologies; long exposures, colour and mono formats to convey a narrative. I use these tools and techniques to fuel my passion and tell a story of a deeply personal cultural journey.

Journey Within has been a pilgrimage, returning to my roots in Poland and remembering who I am by exploring places, people, and my heritage. Feeling a deep sense of displacement and loss of identity, I began to discover more about myself along the way. Journeying with a hand-built camera enabled me to see. Through the lens I felt more alive, recharged, feeling complete.

My photography is built around collaboration with Ukrainian families who have sought refuge in England after being forced to leave their homes because of the war. Each family carries its own history, shaped by loss, displacement, and the challenge of rebuilding life in an unfamiliar place. Through these portraits, I aim to document both the families and the individual people.

Alongside the photographs, I include recorded conversations that allow their voices to exist beyond the images. I also work with archival material from before and during the war, offering fragments of life as it once was, memories of home, normality, and connection.

This project is driven by a belief in peace and accountability. By focusing on the human reality behind conflict and displacement, I hope the work encourages empathy and a deeper understanding of the urgency to end the war’s destructive impact. Ultimately, my aim is for these images and stories to inspire reflection and action toward a more peaceful future.

The work shown below is from the project but is not the whole series or the whole work. The complete project and images will be shown in the book. This series will only show examples of my work and what you can expect, but there is a lot more going on in my work, with lots of different aspects.

		<description>The Distance We Carry

‘The Distance We Carry’ explores the experiences of Europeans who moved to England, each carrying their own history, expectations, and sense of belonging. Some arrived as children, entering an unfamiliar culture, language, and school system with little control over the change. Others moved as adults, alone or with partners, seeking new opportunities while negotiating what they left behind. Across ages and backgrounds, their stories reveal shifting relationships to home, identity, and the places that shape us.
The project brings together portraits, interviews, and personal archival photographs to trace these layered narratives. Each sitter is photographed in a location that reflects something of their character or past, then interviewed about when they moved, what life was like in their home country, how the transition unfolded, and what they miss. Their childhood photographs act as quiet anchors, connecting present realities to earlier versions of themselves.
Through these individual accounts, the work reflects on migration, memory, and the emotional distances people navigate. It speaks to those who have felt out of place or unseen, offering a reminder that behind every journey lies a different story of resilience, loss, and belonging.

Georgios Chatzopoulos
Greek
In 2012, served the Greek army duties and lived in Poland for 3 years. 2015 I moved to Oslo, Norway, and moved back to Greece in 2016 for a few months which is when I met my girlfriend. After a few months, moved to Germany, where her family lives. I’ve been a chef since I was 16 and now wherever I travelled there always were job opportunities.
In Greece, in the capital there is lots of graffiti, taller and bigger buildings and not many parks compared to Bath. The people there are nice but aren't so open.
First time ever moving to England, a friend offered a job at a Greek restaurant in Midsomer Norton. Worst experience ever, Manager was a prick, worked 2 months without getting paid. For a couple of months I lived in a hostel where I was moved around room to room but since getting a new job, got paid more, got a better place to live in and sent money to my family to support them as my Father died when I was 17.
I miss my family, the food, the weather and the beaches and the sea. I do also miss riding my motorcycle.

Moved to the UK 29th August 2020 during the Covid times, alone but exited. Only visit the family max 2 weeks. Had to survive alone, find a job to support myself financially, find a Uni to study foundation and then fine art.
I grew up in a village in a posh area, 30 minutes from Barcelona, with no trains, only buses. Nature is everywhere, no tall buildings, only farmer houses and it’s always sunny, only raining in April. But the family is a bit toxic which made me move and it was the best decision I made.
There are things I miss and that would be food, friends, beaches and the transparent sea, also the family, oldest in the family and leaving siblings.

September 2020 started uni during Covid which is also around the time I moved to England.
The people here are more Polite as where in Romania people are more blunt. There were some mixed experiences when moving. At freshers week a few things were off but nothing too bad.
In Romania the buildings are nice but a lot greyer and mixes of things but I like the architecture here more in Bath.
Miss more of the freedom for people, the food, landscapes, nature and the forests.

Violeta Davidovičiūtė
Lithuanian
22nd March 2017, moved to the UK and been here for 5 ½ years. In Lithuania there weren't many buildings or nature around but after going back to Lithuania a few times there are a lot more buildings, more trees, more nature so everything change very quickly and it’s beautiful.
After moving I knew nothing, couldn’t understand anything and couldn't even speak English. After 2 years I managed to speak a bit of English and just about to understand it. The people here are nice but the weather is mostly bad, too windy, too rainy. After some time I got used to it. The nature was good and I had a good experience overall.
The things I miss are my friends, nature and the snow in the winter.

Robert Jedrzejczak
Polish
Born in Poland, Nowa Sól and moved to the UK in 2005. Nowa Sól is a small town with a dense population with shops and markets everywhere.
After getting to the UK and starting school, It was all alien, didn’t understand the language, Didn’t know anyone
In primary school there was some racism towards Polish people. Got Bullied by kids and sometimes by the teachers themselves. Of course I made some friends who aren’t like that and had some fun times as well.
In secondary school things got a lot better, Made more friends, started to train for Bath rugby and by that time my Polish accent disappeared.
The things I miss are my whole family, 90% of them, The food and the culture.

Oa Fontana Rava
Italian
Moved to England September 2019 in Cambridge doing foundation. But start of 2020 had to leave England due to Covid. Start of September 2020 Joined Bath Spa studying BA photography.
In Italy the buildings are much taller and everywhere you go these shops and markets around, whereas in England shops are more centred in one or 2 areas.
At the beginning everything felt strange, felt alone especially when families were not close by and didn't know anyone. But by time I found some other Europeans that really helped. After getting back to Italy, the English language started to take over, making it harder to speak Italian, pronunciation wise. Finally got the NHS number after 3 years
Some friendships were lost after moving somewhere else because of some reasons such as jealousy.
Missing the fresh food, missing family and Sunday dinner.

Reviving the Moggies traces the history and craft of the Morris Minor Restoration Centre, founded by architect‑turned‑restorer Charles Ware. Drawn to the character of vintage cars and the culture surrounding them, I followed the story of how Ware transformed a small workshop on Lower Bristol Road in Bath into a respected hub for Morris Minor restoration.

This project documents the meticulous processes involved in bringing neglected Moggies back to life. Through portraits of the workshop, the mechanics, and the cars themselves, the photographs reveal the quiet beauty of vehicles on the edge of disappearance: rusted shells, stripped interiors, and the slow, careful work that returns them to the road. Each image reflects both abandonment and resilience, capturing the moment where decay gives way to renewal.

At its core, the work is a study of craft, dedication, and the persistence of a cultural icon. By tracing the centre’s origins and the labour behind each restoration, the project offers a visual record of human ingenuity and the enduring appeal of the Morris Minor.

Herman Miller at Locksbrook traces Herman Miller’s transition

from its purpose‑built building in Bath to its new site in Melksham, and the stories carried by the people who lived through that change. Known for its influential furniture design, the company left behind an iconic structure that was later transformed into Bath Spa University’s Locksbrook Campus. My connection to this shift is personal: as Covid‑19 restrictions eased, my family moved from Bath to Melksham, I began studying photography at Locksbrook, and I started working at Herman Miller’s new facility. I found myself moving between the company’s past and present every day.

This project brings together portraits, archival material, and interviews with long‑standing workers who remember the Bath building and newer employees who joined in Melksham. Through these conversations and images, I explore how architecture, memory, and labour intersect, and how a company’s identity is shaped by the spaces it occupies. The work reflects on continuity and change, capturing Herman Miller’s footprint through the people who built it, adapted with it, and carried its history forward.

Andy Powell &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Monday 22nd November 2021

“ I started to work for Herman Miller in 1984 and have been there for 37 years. The first job I started off with was Fabric covering for example pin boards, but Because I got quite good at the job and team leaders were invented I started to move around the building, building my experiences and learning new skills in different areas such as shrink wrap, cell 23 and cell 03 which were the pain jobs, but the only place I havent worked at was the stores which was located at the back of the building. I’ve been working there for 5 years and after that Fabrics were moved to building 1 which is Lidl now and thats where I started to make chairs and continued to do Fabric work for another 2 -3 years night shifts. After those years and worked&#38;nbsp; around BUilding 1 and 2 for another 11 years I moved to a different building in Chippenham for a year, then moved around the UK to other buildings, including in Ireland. And now I Moved to Melksham where I work now running the cbs for 4 and a half years.”

“There were good and Bad times in the past but it was fun. I think personally I liked to work at Building 1 (Lidl) a lot more just because it was a lot more of a cleaner environment, quieter and more relaxed.”

Derrick Burford&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Monday 8th November 2021

“I’ve been working as a supervisor for over 26 years now at Herman Miller which has been quite a long time and right now I work at Cell 03 which is the apple section in Melksham which is where we sand down some edges on tables, normally for Apple. For one of the processes we have to add vinyl to the edges and then just make it look good for instance sand some sharp edges and make sure everything is in spec condition before we send it off to get it packed and shipped. We used to have these robotic machines to do it for us but we got rid of them now so everything we do is by hand.”

“Where I started off was at Woodmill which is the a university campus now, and that place used to be a lot smaller, things were ran differently for example for the products to be shipped off, a delivery truck gets loaded in Bath at Woodmill and then it gets sent off all the way to chippenham to a delivery place and then it get s shipped which is a lot of money and it’s really time consuming but now because we have moved buildings to melksham, we have all the facilities all in one place so it saves money and time which is better. I did start off in a small group, there are plenty of opportunities for people to work there, but not many people picked the supervisor job as it is hard work and you will need to know most of the processes.”

“I worked across the whole building in the Woodmill in the past, from working the edge Bander, to screens etc. there are things I don't miss as much but working at the old building was just full of joy, more relaxed, fun and it was just better times like the time someone is getting married or celebrates something, we chuck them into this large sink where these all sorts of things floating in it not just water, for instance old glue and drinks. It was great fun.”

Jakub Knap&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 27th October 2021

“I’ve started working at Herman Miller in Melksham at the start of July 2021 which was quite a new interesting experience for me even though it is in my skill set. For the first few weeks I worked at screens. After getting used to it and getting used to the work place I was moved to a different area which was Cell 3 where tables for Apple are being produced. What we have to do is we get a few pallets full of apple tables and we have to sand down the edge of the table, apply a water based glue with a spray gun and put a wooden vinyl on top. After we move it to set and start making it look nice. Last step is just cleaning it and doing a quality check before it gets sent off, but this is one of the processes out of many.

I really do enjoy working there, making some friends on the way, having a laugh but also working hard as it's a nice, good way to get things of my mind and get the experience of working hard. Everyone there is quite friendly, and it is quite relaxed compared to other jobs such as being a waiter but that is my point of view. “

Steve Lee &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Saturday 30th October 2021

Steve was born in Southmead Bristol in July 1957 and because of his age we can tell he has a history and a story hiding behind him of how he started to work for Herman Miller. He moved to Exmouth at the age of 6 between 1963 - 1964 and went to Exmouth comprehensive school.

1973 - He went to a catering college in Exeter.

1974 - Joined the army, catering care.

1976 - Went parachute training with the P Company but while doing it, at some point he landed badly during the session and disjointed his joints in his knee in Kenya

1981 - became a Civilian and became a second chief serving Danish Food but after the head chief left he took over the position and was a head chief for 3 years until he got bored of it.

After this he decided to go traveling a bit around the UK on his motorcycle visiting different towns and experiencing different pubs which was something he always wanted to do, with also having a year long break from work to enjoy it.

Early 1986 - After his travel he got a job at a rubber Factory in Box and worked there for around 2 years.

1988 - Offered a better job doing the same thing but for a different company which worked better for him as he had more pay in Corsham, Been there for 3 years.

1991 - Laid off due to the company moving locations to Scotland.
1992 - 1994 worked for Bath Archaeological trust, research materials and measuring them around Bath to document it.
Around this time he had a problem breathing so it turned out that he needed inhalers but between 1991 and 1997 he passed out struggling to breath, went to hospital and discovered he had Pleurisy which is liquid build up in his lungs.
July 1997 - Had an interview with Herman Miller and they offered him night shifts but he declined it as it was too much for him especially working a lot in the past.4th August 1997 - Herman Miller had another job opening for day shifts and he accepted.
2010 - Found out he had lung disease.
And now he has been working for Herman Miller for 24 years starting off at Building 2 Woodmill which was one of his best experiences as everyone was friendly, being cared for like a family. Used to have company Christmas picnics or parties and sometimes there were kids parties where workers can bring their children so the kids can get to know each other. Bath was ‘Brilliant’ for him and others as there were lots of good times. After Herman Miller moved out from Bath to Melksham, things got harder and it wasn’t as easy as it used to be but things change.
